CNC Machine Tools

CNC Machines use numerical control for the motion of machine tools.  Such tools can be machining centres, lathes, milling machines, laser cutting machines and an endless list of others.  They can vary from large industrial machines required to work continuously with high requirements for reliability to smaller machines less intensively used, but still digitally controlled.

CNC machines have become progressively more capable and powerful.  The great advantage of CNC machines is that a finished component can be made relatively quickly, and this can compare well with traditional process such as casting or moulding to make a shape of component.

Fundamentally, what a CNC machines does is to position a cutting tool and move it at a speed defined by the supplier of the tool, and on a profile that will create the shape of part required.

Motion Control Systems in CNC Machines

The motion control system for a CNC Machine consists of a controller which instructs motors which drive different axis of the machining operations.  There can be multiple motors to create the required motion, which will interact with the controller.  There are different types of CNC Controllers available, ranging from simple to much more complex.  The motors generally fall into different categories:

DC Brushless Servo Motors. Used when high speed lower torque is required.  This might be for powering cutting tools.  Brushless motors have the best capabilities for extended lives and high efficiencies.  Gearboxes may be added if lower speed higher torque duties are required.

Stepper motors will be used when low speed and precision is required. This might be for the positioning of axis.

When it comes to axis positioning, we can supply a wide range of linear encoders to give feedback on axis position.  Our ranges of motion controllers include the CS Lab range of PC based motion controllers, which offer an economical range of e of PC based CNC controllers communicating via ethercat.  These are used by automation specialists, retrofit specialists and hobbyists.

We also supply Tex systems & solutions stand alone controllers.  These provide a powerful control system for multi-axis CNC machines and are ideal for OEM applications.  Tex products include HMIs and are capable of driving large numbers of axis.
