Technical Overview
A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an industrial computer designed specifically for automating machinery and processes. It is highly versatile and commonly used for controlling tasks such as sequencing, logic operations, timing, and counting in industrial applications. PLCs are built to operate in harsh environments and interface directly with field devices like sensors and actuators.
- Key Features:
- Executes logic-based operations (e.g. start/stop sequences, interlocks).
- Interfaces with input/output (I/O) modules to control equipment.
- Provides robust and reliable performance in demanding conditions.
- Programmable using user-friendly languages such as Ladder Logic and Structured Text.
- Typical Applications:
- Controlling conveyor systems in factories.
- Managing temperature, pressure, and flow in industrial processes.
- Orchestrating multi-step operations, like packaging or assembly lines.
A Motion Controller is a specialised device used to control precise movement and positioning in mechanical systems, such as motors, robotic arms, and actuators. It focuses on tasks like trajectory planning, speed regulation, and synchronisation of multiple axes of motion. Motion controllers are essential in applications where high precision and smooth operation are required.
- Key Features:
- Manages motion parameters such as position, speed, acceleration, and torque.
- Uses advanced algorithms like PID control or field-oriented control for precision.
- Integrates with feedback devices (e.g., encoders) for real-time monitoring and corrections.
- Supports multi-axis coordination and smooth trajectory generation.
- Typical Applications:
- Controlling robotic arms in manufacturing and assembly.
- Driving CNC machines for precision cutting and milling.
- Synchronising multi-axis systems in printing and packaging lines.
