Overcoming Antenna Pointing Challenges with Ultra IncOder Series with our partner Celera Motion

Celera Motion our partner has addressed a significant challenge in the realm of Satcom On-The-Move with its innovative Ultra IncOder Series. A Static Synchronous Compensator is a fast-acting device capable of providing or absorbing reactive current, thereby regulating the voltage at the connection point to a power grid. It is categorised under Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. This case study details the challenges faced, the solution provided by Celera Motion, and the customer benefits derived from this advanced technology.

The Challenge:

Satellite communications typically rely on ground antennas transmitting radio signals to satellites orbiting high above the Earth, which then relay the signals to various global locations. The rise in applications leveraging the low cost and high signal bandwidth of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations has significantly impacted the demands on antenna pointing systems. LEO satellites provide higher bandwidth due to their proximity to Earth, leading users to expect high data transfer speeds. However, the shorter visibility period of these closer satellites requires many satellites to form a constellation.

Satcom-at-sea devices, including Automated Positioning Systems (APSs) or Antenna Pointing Systems, are compact and lightweight systems mounted into Velocity Synthetic Aperture Radars (VSARs) with Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs) on maritime vessels. These systems, placed in wet environments, are susceptible to motion-induced antenna pointing errors and require stabilized control of the servo-driven azimuth and elevation axes.

The solution:

Celera Motion addressed these challenges with its Ultra IncOder Series, high-accuracy, inductive, rotary position encoders designed for tough conditions. Each unit is pre-calibrated to deliver sensor accuracies down to less than 19 arc seconds, with resolutions of up to 22 bits, and can be installed with modest tolerances.

Using rugged and reliable electromagnetic induction sensing principles similar to resolvers but replacing bulky coil winding with PCB conductive traces, the Ultra IncOder enables a low-profile sensor design with a large through-hole. This design allows it to be mounted in situ to meet the requirements of challenging application environments.

Customer Benefits:

The Ultra IncOder Series offers several customer benefits:

High Pointing Accuracy and Resolution

Enabling precise antenna pointing in maritime VSAT systems.

Compact and Lightweight Design

The low-profile form factor allows for a more compact and lighter antenna system.

Large Through-Hole Design

Provides space for associated cable shafts, bearings, and ancillary components to be installed around the device.

With MIL standard vibration and shock performance, the housed and potted PCB sensor is optimised for resilience against temperature changes, electromagnetic noise, and wet and dusty environments. The Ultra IncOder is perfectly suited for integration into azimuth and elevation-actuated axes using modest installation tolerances.
